YAGP’s 2012 Grand Prix Winner Kimin Kim, received a contract to the Mariinsky Ballet, and was promoted to Principal at the beginning of this year. He returned in 2015 to perform in YAGP’s 2015 Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala, and a guest performance during ABT’s spring season at the Metropolitan Opera. Kimin has been awarded top accolades at international ballet competitions in Rome, Moscow, and Seoul. Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times recently described Kimin as “…one sensation after another…This tall young Korean dancer is a new star with the Mariinsky Ballet; he jumps astoundingly, turns with prowess and carries himself with nobility.”

YAGP and the Mariinsky Ballet have collaborated on several successful co-productions together. This year, the YAGP Gala stage hosted a Mariinsky World Premiere, as alum Calvin Royal III performed with one of Mariinsky Ballet’s most exciting dancers, Kristina Shapran. The playful piece, ‘Double Polka,’ was choreographed by Mariinsky’s Anton Pimonov, selected as the YAGP 2014 Emerging Choreographer. Calvin flew to St. Petersburg to rtrain, as part of his Lenore Annenberg Foundation grant, and rehearsed with Kristina, to premiere the work at YAGP’s 2015 Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala at Lincoln Center. See a short video of the talented dancers in rehearsal.

Two current YAGP participants, Austen Acevedo and Kenedy Kallas, performed at the Mariinsky Ballet Festival in St. Petersburg. “Who is My Shadow” was a visually arresting piece, staged specifically for the young dancers by Mariinsky’s Yuri Smekalove. After performing it to critical acclaim during the festival, Austen and Kenedy repeated their performance at YAGP’s 2015 Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala and at the Gala de Danza in Cabo, Mexico. The duo are the first dancers from outside the Russian institution to be invited to perform in the festival, making it a historic event and setting a new precedent for young dancers across the globe.
